An ingredient found in Antarctica to combat dehydration and the cold

Antarticine is a glycoprotein extracted from the polar seas. During a polar expedition in 1988, a Spanish scientist collected samples from the depths of Antarctica, a particularly untouched environment protected from any type of pollution. A micro-organism, Pseudoalteromonas Antarctica, was extracted from these samples. The micro-organism was studied and the active ingredient assessed.
How it works? Pseudoalteromonas secretes the glycoprotein when subjected to hydric stress. Surprisingly, there is very little water available in Antarctica because it is found in solid form. The glycoprotein forms a sort of barrier that traps the water, creating an effective defense mechanism against dehydration and the cold. This process is also found on the skin and the glycoprotein offers protection against dehydration and the cold.
